Loving You Was a Sin

Ayra had never believed in fate. To her, life was a series of choices—sometimes good, sometimes bad. But when her best friend, Sameer, walked into her life ten years ago, she began to question her certainty.
Over the years, their bond grew stronger. They were inseparable, their connection unspoken yet undeniable. Ayra shared her dreams of becoming a writer, while Sameer revealed his passion for architecture. They spent late nights on the rooftop of Ayra’s house, under the starlit sky, talking about everything and nothing.
But as time passed, Ayra began to feel something she couldn’t name. Her heart raced when Sameer laughed at her jokes. Her stomach fluttered when their hands accidentally brushed. It was a feeling that left her both exhilarated and terrified. How could she fall for her best friend?
One evening, as the monsoon rain drenched the city, Ayra and Sameer sat in their favorite café. The world outside blurred through the rain-streaked windows. Ayra stirred her chai absentmindedly, stealing glances at Sameer as he sketched on a napkin.
“What are you drawing?” she asked, trying to sound casual.
“Just an idea for a park. It’s for a project I’m working on,” he replied, not looking up.
Ayra nodded, but her mind wasn’t on the conversation. She wanted to tell him, to confess what had been weighing on her heart. But fear held her back. What if she ruined everything?
“Sameer,” she began hesitantly.
He looked up, his brown eyes locking onto hers. “Yeah?”
“Never mind,” she said quickly, shaking her head.
Sameer frowned. “Ayra, what is it?”
Before she could answer, the waiter arrived with their order, breaking the moment. Ayra sighed, silently cursing her cowardice.
A week later, Ayra’s parents announced a dinner gathering to celebrate her cousin’s engagement. Sameer, as always, was invited. Ayra spent the evening in a daze, her emotions a swirling mess. She couldn’t ignore the way Sameer looked in his crisp white kurta or the way his laughter lit up the room.
After dinner, Ayra found herself alone in the garden, the cool night air soothing her racing thoughts. She didn’t hear Sameer approach until he spoke.
“You’ve been quiet tonight. Everything okay?”
Ayra turned to him, her heart pounding. “Just tired,” she lied.
Sameer studied her for a moment, then smiled gently. “You’re a terrible liar.”
Ayra laughed softly, her nerves easing slightly. “Maybe.”
They stood in silence, the night filled with the sound of crickets and distant laughter. Ayra felt the weight of the words she wanted to say. Taking a deep breath, she decided to leap.
“Sameer, there’s something I need to tell you,” she said, her voice trembling.
He turned to her, his expression serious. “What is it?”
Ayra looked into his eyes, finding courage in their warmth. “I think… I’m in love with you.
Her confession hung suspended between the two of them as a thin wire. Sameer’s eyes widened in surprise, and for a moment, Ayra feared the worst. But then, he smiled—a smile so genuine it made her breath catch.
“Ayra,” he began softly, “I’ve loved you for as long as I can remember.”
Tears welled up in Ayra’s eyes as relief and joy washed over her. “You have?”
He nodded. “But I was scared. I didn’t want to risk losing you.”
Ayra laughed through her tears. “We’re both cowards, aren’t we?”
Sameer chuckled, reaching out to take her hand. “Maybe. But not anymore.”
